Sandbar Secures $13 Million to Launch Innovative Smart Ring

Sandbar, a technology startup founded by former Meta engineers, has successfully raised $13 million in funding to launch its innovative product, the Stream smart ring. This device aims to revolutionize how users engage with technology through voice control, offering a more personal approach to wearable devices.

Introducing Stream: A New Era of Voice-Controlled Technology

The Stream smart ring, designed to be worn on the dominant index finger, combines sleek aesthetics with advanced functionality. This device, which has been referred to as “a mouse for voice,” allows users to capture notes, interact with virtual assistants, and control media through simple gestures. The ring features built-in microphones and a touchpad that activates only when pressed, prioritizing user privacy and intentional use.

During a recent demonstration, Mina Fahmi, CEO of Sandbar, showcased how users can easily record their ideas by pressing and holding the touchpad. Even whispered thoughts are transcribed accurately into the accompanying iOS app. This design addresses the growing demand for privacy in wearable technology by avoiding constant listening.

Bridging the Gap Between Thought and Action

Fahmi, who has a background in human-computer interfaces from companies like Kernel and Magic Leap, drew inspiration for the Stream ring from his own journaling challenges. He found that existing apps often impeded spontaneous thought, leading him to develop hardware that only listens when users want it to.

The interface of Stream is designed to feel conversational, with its AI assistant engaging users as they speak. This feature helps refine notes, create to-do lists, and organize reflections. Notably, the assistant’s voice is tailored to sound slightly similar to the user’s own, enhancing the personal experience.

In terms of functionality, the ring also serves as a music controller, making it a versatile tool for users on the go. Pricing for the Stream starts at $249 for the silver model and $299 for the gold version, with preorders now available and shipping expected in summer 2024. Additionally, a Pro subscription tier will offer enhanced features for $10 per month after a complimentary three-month trial.

With backing from investors including True Ventures, Upfront Ventures, and Betaworks, Sandbar is well-positioned to establish itself in the competitive market of wearable technology. Fahmi emphasizes the importance of data control, ensuring that all user information is encrypted and easily exportable to applications like Notion.

As the demand for personal and privacy-focused technology continues to grow, the Stream smart ring could be a significant player in the evolution of wearable devices, blending functionality with user-centric design.
