Guardiola Urges Patience as Rodri Faces Injury Recovery Challenges

Pep Guardiola has called for patience regarding midfielder Rodri’s recovery as Manchester City navigates ongoing injury challenges. The Ballon d’Or winner has made only one brief substitute appearance in the past month, raising concerns ahead of City’s upcoming clash with Liverpool on October 8, 2023. Guardiola expressed confidence that Rodri will return to form but emphasized the need for caution during his rehabilitation.

Rodri has struggled to regain his place in the starting lineup since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in September 2022. He has only started seven matches this season, with his last full appearance occurring during a match against Brentford on October 5, 2023. Guardiola acknowledged the complexities of managing Rodri’s return, particularly given the demands of a congested fixture schedule.

“Rodri can play one game a week but if we play Sunday, then after Tuesday, Saturday after Wednesday – then go to the national team – this is another kind of competition,” Guardiola explained. He noted that while Rodri is capable of playing, the rigorous pace of matches every few days could lead to setbacks, especially following a significant injury.

Guardiola is adamant about taking measured steps to ensure Rodri’s health. “I am 100 percent convinced he will be back and will play,” he stated. “It will take a little bit of time to reach the level that he had. But we have to be sure he’s there [physically].” The City manager reiterated the need for careful monitoring, emphasizing that the team will only field Rodri when he is fully prepared.

In Rodri’s absence, Nico Gonzalez has stepped up to fill the defensive midfielder role. Guardiola praised Rodri’s influence on Gonzalez, describing him as “the best teacher” for the young player. The manager shared insights into Rodri’s commitment, noting, “All I want is Rodri to be happy, he starts to smile and enjoy again. It’s been tough.”

Guardiola reflected on the emotional toll of long-term injuries, suggesting that the most difficult phase has passed for Rodri. “Now is the end, he has to try to stay ‘ok, I’ll be back around the corner and be with the team to do it’,” he remarked.

As Manchester City prepares for their vital match against Liverpool, the focus remains on Rodri’s gradual return to full fitness. The club’s medical team and coaching staff are united in their efforts to ensure he can contribute at his highest level once again. Guardiola’s leadership during this challenging time underscores his commitment to both the player’s well-being and the team’s success.
