A prison officer at HMP Parc, a facility operated by G4S, is under investigation for allegedly threatening to “smother” an inmate. The incident reportedly occurred at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, where the officer was accompanying the inmate who was receiving treatment following a stroke.
According to a nurse who overheard the comment, the officer made the remark while the inmate was in visible distress, groaning in pain. The alleged threat was subsequently reported to G4S by the nurse, prompting the security company to initiate an investigation into the matter.
A spokesperson for G4S confirmed that an investigation is underway but declined to provide further details, including whether the officer has been suspended during this process.
Concerns Over Safety and Standards at HMP Parc
The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of HMP Parc, which has faced serious allegations regarding safety and management. A recent report highlighted a troubling rise in drug-related issues at the facility, noting that there were 17 inmate deaths in the previous year, more than any other prison in the UK. Of these deaths, five were attributed to drug use.
The report criticized G4S for failing to address the alarming influx of drugs into the prison, attributing the decline in standards to the company securing a 10-year contract to manage HMP Parc. It specifically pointed out deficiencies, such as unsecured cell windows that made it easy for drugs to be smuggled in, including by drone.
In recent months, HMP Parc has also witnessed violent incidents, including two alleged stabbings. One incident involved an inmate who allegedly created a weapon from a tin can while under the influence of the potent synthetic cannabinoid known as spice.
Previous Controversies and Management Response
Earlier this year, leaked messages among prison staff revealed disturbing comments in which officers appeared to boast about violence against inmates and mocked those who self-harmed. Although eight officers were arrested in connection with these messages, authorities chose not to pursue further action. Five of the officers involved were dismissed, while two resigned during the investigation.
In response to the recent inspection findings, a G4S spokesperson stated that the prison has made “considerable” improvements and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates. The spokesperson emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts to implement a comprehensive improvement plan to enhance services at HMP Parc.
As the investigation into the alleged threat continues, there remains significant concern about the overall safety and treatment of inmates at the facility, highlighting the challenges facing private prison management in the UK.
