Superheroes Unite for Urgent 5K, Raising Funds for Teens 4 Change

UPDATE: The eighth annual Superhero 5K took place in Bennington on the morning of November 8, with approximately 170 participants braving blustery conditions to support the local Teens 4 Change program. As superheroes filled the grounds of the Berkshire Family YMCA, the weather unexpectedly improved, creating a perfect atmosphere for a community gathering.

Participants huddled at the start line on Gage Street, energized by laughter and camaraderie just moments before the race began. “Have fun out there; have a blast,” encouraged the announcer. The event kicked off following a stirring performance of the National Anthem by local singer Lauren Biasi, setting the tone for a day of family-friendly fun and healthy competition.

Despite a brief rain shower that scattered tents and surprised attendees, spirits remained high as runners dashed forward. From seasoned athletes to families with dogs dressed as superheroes, the vibrant atmosphere showcased the community’s spirit. “This is a really great community event,” said Heidi French, director of community relations and development for United Counseling Service (UCS). “Every year it’s gotten bigger, and people are excited about it.”

The race featured a blocked lane for runners, with Bennington emergency services and volunteers ensuring safety throughout the event. First to cross the finish line was Jayden Thomas, 19, clocking an impressive time of 17:37.3. He was closely followed by Joseph Carter, 36, with a time of 18:00.4, and Thomas Crowers, 16, finishing at 18:04.3.

Participants ranged widely in age, highlighting the event’s inclusive nature—from 6-year-old Rye Taibi-Burrell to 79-year-old Linda Putney. “The Superhero 5K really is about bringing the community together and having fun,” stated Lorna Mattern, CEO of UCS. She emphasized the interconnectedness of physical and mental health, encouraging attendees to stay active for their wellbeing.

All proceeds from the race benefit Teens 4 Change, a program empowering local youth through volunteer opportunities and leadership experiences. “They’re out there working, giving back, and supporting the community,” Mattern noted, highlighting the involvement of Teens 4 Change members in directing traffic and cheering on participants.

The event was backed by numerous sponsors, including the Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal, and Coggins Toyota of Bennington. Additionally, Hanafords generously provided snacks for participants, enhancing the community feel of the occasion.
