UPDATE: Two men have been arrested and three police officers injured following a series of violent ramming incidents in Belfast late last night. The events unfolded during two separate confrontations, causing significant concern among local authorities and residents.
The first incident occurred around 11:20 PM on November 14, 2023, in the Falls Road area. Police officers observed a vehicle operating suspiciously, leading to a high-speed pursuit after the driver accelerated away onto Clowney Street. During this chase, the suspect vehicle rammed into a police car, inflicting substantial damage and rendering the police vehicle undrivable. One officer sustained minor injuries in the collision.
Shortly after, the same vehicle was spotted on the Grosvenor Road, where police deployed a Stinger device to halt the driver. The individual was arrested on multiple charges, including dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
In a separate incident in east Belfast, officers on Beersbridge Road observed another vehicle violating a traffic signal. This vehicle collided with the rear of a police patrol car at the Bloomfield Avenue junction, prompting a brief pursuit. The driver was arrested for similar offenses, including resisting police and assault. Fortunately, the injuries to the officers involved are not believed to be serious.
Police Inspector Stewart condemned the reckless behavior of both drivers, stating, “Members of the public could also have been injured as a result of these completely reckless incidents.” Authorities are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage of the events to contact them immediately at 101.
