UN Agency Reports Ongoing Aid Blockades in Gaza Despite Ceasefire

A ceasefire intended to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has not resulted in the expected flow of essential supplies. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has reported ongoing restrictions imposed by Israel that continue to hinder the delivery of critical aid. According to Tamara Alrifai, UNRWA’s director of communications, the agency faces stringent limitations despite its pivotal role in providing support to the enclave.

UNRWA has emphasized that it operates under **double the scrutiny** and restrictions compared to other humanitarian organizations in the region. Alrifai stated, “UNRWA is under double the amount of scrutiny and restrictions than other agencies despite being the largest agency there.” She highlighted that stockpiles in neighbouring countries, particularly in Egypt and Jordan, could immediately supply **6,000 lorries** with necessary goods if access were granted.

The situation at Gaza’s remaining open crossings has created significant bottlenecks, with aid trucks experiencing prolonged delays. Alrifai noted that many trucks have been idling for days due to lengthy Israeli inspections. These inspections have not only slowed the movement of supplies but have also led to the removal of essential items. Alrifai pointed out that Israeli authorities frequently categorize basic goods as “dual-use” items, a classification that humanitarian groups argue is disconnected from civilian needs and serves to reinforce the existing blockade.

“Israel, during the inspection and the scrutiny, would take out many items that are extremely needed, especially in this winter situation,” Alrifai explained. The implications of these restrictions are severe, as the ongoing blockade exacerbates the already dire conditions faced by the population in Gaza.

As the humanitarian crisis persists, the international community continues to call for increased access for aid organizations like UNRWA. The agency remains committed to assisting those in need, yet the ongoing challenges highlight the complexities of delivering assistance in a conflict zone. The situation remains fluid, and the need for humanitarian intervention is more critical than ever.
