Pierce Brosnan, the actor known for his role as James Bond from 1995 to 2002, has not dismissed the idea of returning to the iconic franchise. In a recent conversation with GQ, the 72-year-old actor acknowledged the ongoing discussions surrounding the future of Bond, particularly following the franchise’s acquisition by Amazon MGM Studios. Brosnan stated, “Of course, people ask about Bond – ‘would you?’ and whatever – but that’s another man’s job.” He expressed curiosity about future developments, emphasizing that “the possibilities of working within that film” could be exciting.
Brosnan also entertained the idea of portraying a retired agent, rather than stepping back into the title role. He remarked, “Sometimes you entertain it and sometimes you just move on.” This open-mindedness hints at a willingness to consider various avenues in the Bond universe.
In an interview with Radio Times earlier this year, Brosnan revealed a particular interest in collaborating with acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve on a potential Bond project. He noted, “My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond.” He acknowledged that numerous talented candidates are in contention and expressed confidence that the next installment will be a spectacle for audiences.
While Brosnan humorously acknowledged his age—saying, “I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond”—he remained enthusiastic about the possibilities that Villeneuve might bring to the franchise. “If Villeneuve had something up his sleeve, I would look at it in a heartbeat. Why not? It’s great entertainment,” he added, suggesting that even unconventional ideas could lead to engaging entertainment.
Brosnan’s legacy as James Bond began with his acclaimed performance in GoldenEye (1995), which revitalized the franchise. He starred in a total of four films, including Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). His tenure included collaborations with notable actors such as Judi Dench, Sean Bean, and Halle Berry, contributing to a series of commercial successes.
Despite hopes for a fifth installment during his time as Bond, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli opted for a new direction in the franchise. Brosnan was informed of this decision in a phone call in 2004, which he described as “utterly shocked” and felt sidelined by the abrupt change.
Reflecting on his Bond years, Brosnan shared with The Guardian in 2020 that he holds “no regrets” about his portrayal. He stated, “Bond is the gift that keeps giving and has allowed me to have a wonderful career.” He emphasized the enduring impact of the role, noting, “Once you’re branded as a Bond, it’s with you forever, so you better make peace with it.”
As discussions about the future of James Bond continue, Brosnan’s remarks highlight both the nostalgia for his era and the possibilities that lie ahead for the franchise. With the landscape shifting under Amazon’s stewardship, fans and actors alike are keenly awaiting the next chapter in the storied history of 007.
