Grey Dawning Aims for Betfair Chase Glory at Haydock Park Saturday

UPDATE: Trainer Dan Skelton is gearing up for a thrilling showdown this Saturday, November 22, 2025, as his horse Grey Dawning seeks redemption in the highly anticipated Betfair Chase at Haydock Park. Skelton believes Grey Dawning, now eight years old, has “unfinished business” after finishing as runner-up last year, and he’s currently the 11-8 favorite for the £200,000 Grade One contest.

Grey Dawning, who triumphed at Haydock two years ago and became a Grade One winner at the Cheltenham Festival in 2024, is ready to make his mark again. Last year, he was narrowly beaten by the dual champion Royale Pagaille, who is now set to chase a historic hat-trick in the Betfair Chase, priced at 4-1 to secure another victory.

Skelton expressed confidence in Grey Dawning’s preparation during a press conference at Cheltenham Racecourse. He stated, “I couldn’t have asked for a better preparation. He has won around Haydock before over fences, and it was a great run in the Betfair last year.”

The track conditions are expected to play a pivotal role. The going at Haydock Park is currently described as good to soft, with some soft areas on the chase course. Skelton reflected on last year’s conditions: “I’d have just liked 10mm less (rain).”

The competition is fierce, with entries including Haiti Couleurs, the Irish Grand National victor, and Stellar Story, a promising runner from Gordon Elliott’s yard. Other notable contenders include Handstands, Hitman, and Marsh Wren, all gearing up for a shot at the title.

Skelton is optimistic, noting Grey Dawning’s strong performances in the past year, despite a disappointing pull-up in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase. “His best races last year were at Kelso and Aintree,” he noted, emphasizing the hard work put into this season’s training.

The excitement is palpable as race day approaches. The seven-race card at Haydock kicks off at 12:08 PM, with the Betfair Chase scheduled for 3:00 PM. Tickets are available starting at £29.70 for adults if booked in advance, with gates opening at 10:05 AM.

As Grey Dawning aims for victory, Skelton is determined to bring home the win for owners Robert and Lesley Kirkland. “I’m just really looking forward to Saturday—we’ve got him in great shape,” he said, underscoring the urgency and excitement surrounding this pivotal race.

Stay tuned as the action unfolds at Haydock Park this weekend, with Grey Dawning set to take center stage in a race that promises to be filled with drama and intensity.
