Consett Rotary is launching the town’s first prostate cancer support group, set to commence on January 12, 2024. This initiative aims to fill a significant gap in local healthcare services, as there are currently no support options for prostate cancer patients in Consett and its surrounding areas. The group will be fully funded by Rotary and run by a dedicated team of volunteers committed to providing essential support.
The inaugural meeting will take place at 7:00 PM at Consett Heart on John Street. This gathering offers an opportunity for men affected by prostate cancer to come together, share their experiences, and foster a supportive community. The statistics highlight the importance of such a group; one in eight men will develop prostate cancer at some stage in their lives, underscoring the need for mutual support.
Raising Awareness and Encouraging Prevention
In conjunction with the launch, Consett Rotary is actively promoting awareness about prostate cancer. They have produced a leaflet detailing the warning signs of the disease, emphasizing the importance of early detection. The leaflet encourages men experiencing symptoms to request a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test from their general practitioners.
By educating the community on the potential risks and signs of prostate cancer, Rotary aims to empower individuals to seek medical advice promptly. The group will meet monthly, providing ongoing support and information to its members. Anyone impacted by prostate cancer is encouraged to attend, regardless of where they are in their journey.
The establishment of this support group is a crucial step toward addressing the unmet needs of prostate cancer patients in the region. With the backing of Consett Rotary and its volunteers, the initiative hopes to create a strong network of support and understanding within the community.
