UPDATE: A North East animal shelter is making an urgent call for help to rehome 10 feral cats living in unsuitable conditions. Just last week, authorities discovered that 17 cats had been residing in distressing circumstances in a Tyneside home, prompting immediate action from Cats’ Protection’s Tyneside Adoption Centre.
The shelter reports that the remaining cats are under extreme stress and cannot be taken into care due to limited resources. Michelle Adams, the volunteer team leader, emphasizes that these cats have had little to no socialization, making them unsuitable as family pets. Instead, they would thrive in outdoor environments like stables, farms, or smallholdings.
“We are working closely with the owner to secure the best outcome for these cats,” said Adams. She is currently taking each cat to the vet for neutering or spaying, flea and worm treatment, and vaccination, which costs around £180 per animal.
Adams has successfully rehomed two cats at a holiday park in the Scottish Borders and five on a farm. However, she warns that these feral cats require safe, large outdoor spaces where they can be fed and sheltered. “Preferably, we would rehome them in pairs,” she added, noting that while they may eventually become more comfortable around people, there should be no expectation of them becoming indoor pets.
The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. These cats have endured a tough life, and the shelter is committed to ensuring they are placed in safe environments where their health and well-being can be monitored.
