URGENT UPDATE: Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the attempted murder of retired PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, who was shot in front of his son in Omagh, Co Tyrone, earlier this year. Just announced, two men, aged 37 and 73, were arrested on November 18, 2023, under the Terrorism Act in the Ardboe area.
The arrests come as detectives continue to probe the chilling attack that left Caldwell seriously injured at a sports complex in February 2023. The police previously confirmed that the attack was orchestrated by a collaboration of dissident republicans and an organised crime group. Notably, the New IRA claimed responsibility for the shooting, asserting in a letter shortly after the incident that Caldwell was targeted “within our chosen kill zone.”
Caldwell, who retired from the PSNI on medical grounds last December, was honored with the King’s Police Medal for his service shortly before the attack. Reflecting on the honor, he stated, “I’m feeling very happy, feel very privileged, feel very honoured to be firstly nominated and then to receive such a very nice medal from the King.”
The retired officer endured a harrowing ordeal, having been shot nine times. In a recent interview, he shared, “I’m still recovering from those injuries. But the recovery is going very well, thanks to the medical teams and support from family and friends.”
The police have indicated that several individuals have previously faced charges related to the shooting, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation. As the situation develops, the detained men have been taken to the Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for further questioning.
The implications of these arrests resonate deeply within the community, as residents grapple with the impact of such violence. The return of justice for Caldwell and his family remains a pressing concern, as law enforcement works diligently to address the threats posed by dissident groups.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story, as authorities continue to uncover the details surrounding this alarming attack and its aftermath.
