Urgent Update: 86 International Features Compete for Oscars 2026

BREAKING: A total of 86 international features are now officially under consideration for the prestigious 98th Academy Awards, set to take place in 2026. These films, produced outside the United States and featuring predominantly non-English dialogue, must exceed 40 minutes in length to qualify.

The eligibility criteria are strict: Academy members from all branches can participate in the preliminary voting round but must first meet a minimum viewing requirement. Among the contenders, 35 features are vying for the coveted animated feature film category. Films that have yet to meet their qualifying release requirements must do so to advance in the voting process.

The stakes are high, as the animation branch members will ultimately determine the final five nominees. Academy members outside the animation branch can also opt in to vote, provided they meet the necessary viewing criteria.

In the documentary feature category, an impressive 201 features are competing for consideration. Similar to the animated category, these films must comply with specific release requirements. Additionally, documentaries that have won awards at qualifying film festivals or have been submitted as their country’s official selection in the international feature film category are also eligible.

Mark your calendars: the shortlisted films will be revealed on December 16, 2025, with the final nominations announced on January 22, 2026. This announcement is generating significant excitement in the film community, as industry veterans and newcomers alike aim for recognition on this prestigious platform.
