A visit to the Gordon Rigg Garden Centre in Todmorden, Yorkshire, offers more than just a chance to explore an extensive array of plants. The centre’s café, known for its inviting atmosphere and delightful menu, has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors looking to embrace the festive spirit.
The Gordon Rigg Garden Centre, located on Rochdale Road, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. As a sprawling facility that caters to gardening enthusiasts, it also features two cafés, making it a hub for those seeking a break from shopping for plants. When I visited on a weekday, the café was bustling with families and older patrons, all enjoying a cosy lunch in the conservatory-style setting, complete with a glazed roof that allows natural light to flood the space.
The café offers a diverse menu, with efficient service that enhances the overall experience. I opted for a large cappuccino priced at £3.85, which was expertly brewed and a perfect complement to my meal. I chose the chicken, cheese, and chorizo focaccia sandwich, costing £12.50, featuring locally sourced Kick-Ass cheese from near Preston—a rich and flavorful cheddar that melted beautifully. The sandwich was accompanied by a crunchy salad and coleslaw, providing a satisfying balance of textures.
The café’s atmosphere is remarkably laid-back, with Christmas music setting the mood. As Bing Crosby’s rendition of “White Christmas” played softly in the background, I found it hard not to feel festive. For those wanting to indulge further, a Bailey’s hot chocolate is available for £4.99, adding a delightful touch to the experience.
Interestingly, my journey also led me to revisit memories of visiting Hampson’s garden centre in Huddersfield during my childhood. I discovered that Hampson’s, now known as Hampson’s Plantworld, continues to thrive and is located at Denby Dale Road in Durkar, Wakefield. This establishment also boasts a café and serves Charlotte’s “real Jersey” ice cream, making it another appealing stop for garden centre enthusiasts.
The Gordon Rigg Garden Centre not only showcases a wide variety of gardening supplies but also creates a welcoming environment for visitors to enjoy a meal. As my visit concluded, I left with a sense of calm and appreciation for the charm of garden centres, which have certainly evolved over the years.
For anyone looking to explore Yorkshire’s garden scene, Gordon Rigg serves as an excellent example of how these spaces can offer both relaxation and community engagement, all while celebrating the joy of gardening.
