URGENT UPDATE: Undercover police officers are being deployed across Northern Ireland as the PSNI launches a major safety initiative for the Christmas season. Announced just hours ago, Operation Season’s Greetings aims to enhance public safety during one of the busiest times of the year.
The operation will see increased police presence in Belfast and other towns, focusing on shopping areas, nightlife hotspots, and public transport. Authorities are stepping up efforts to deter crime and protect vulnerable individuals during the festive period, which often sees a rise in incidents.
As part of this operation, the PSNI will implement Project Vigilant, where plain-clothed officers will work alongside uniformed officers in nightlife districts. This initiative is designed to identify predatory behavior and intervene early to prevent potential harm. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson emphasized the importance of this project in combating violence against women and girls.
“By spotting warning signs, such as unwanted attention or someone being followed, our officers can step in before harm occurs,” Henderson stated. He also urged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to reach out for help, noting that reports typically increase during the holiday season. “We are here for you. Call us on 101, report online, or dial 999 in an emergency,” he added.
Police patrols will be intensified as part of the operation, focusing not only on public safety but also on road safety and reducing thefts and antisocial behavior. “Christmas is a time for family, friends, and community,” Henderson remarked. “Our officers will provide a visible presence to help keep people safe and offer reassurance to shoppers and those enjoying festive nights out.”
Residents are encouraged to take precautions, such as securing their homes and planning their outings responsibly. “Small steps can make a big difference,” Henderson advised.
The PSNI is collaborating with partners including Retail NI and Translink through the Business Crime Partnership. This collaboration aims to enhance safety in commercial areas and reduce business-related crime. Ian Campbell, Translink’s Director of Service Operations, praised the efforts and emphasized the importance of planning travel in advance, especially with the return of late-night bus and rail services.
Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts highlighted the need for cooperation with the police, stating, “Christmas is a challenging but enjoyable time for retailers. It’s crucial we work together to keep people safe against shoplifting and other crimes.”
The initiative also received support from Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly, who expressed her hope that everyone enjoys a safe and joyful Christmas. “The collective efforts of the PSNI, businesses, and community organizations play a vital role in keeping our city safe at this busy time of year,” she stated.
With the festive season upon us, the PSNI’s proactive measures under Operation Season’s Greetings are vital to ensuring safety and security for all. Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
