UAB Football Players Recover After Stabbing Incident Before Game

Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football players, identified as defensive linemen Josh Underwood and JaSire Peterson, have been released from hospital following a stabbing incident allegedly involving their teammate. The incident occurred on November 25, 2025, just hours before UAB’s scheduled game against South Florida.

The accused, Daniel Israel Mincey, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail after the incident, which took place at the team’s practice facility around 10:00 AM local time.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen provided a health update during a press conference on the same day, stating, “I’ve had the opportunity to sit with our injured players and their families, and they are okay with me telling you that they have left the hospital and are recovering. They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers.”

UAB officials confirmed that both players are in stable condition. A statement from the university read, “We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover.” The school also indicated that the team decided to proceed with the game, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all students.

Despite the circumstances, UAB played the game as scheduled at Protective Stadium, where they faced a formidable South Florida team, ultimately losing 48-18. In light of the incident, Coach Mortensen addressed the team’s decision to play, noting that while most players participated, several opted to sit out in respect for their injured teammates.

“I do want to address what happened this morning,” Mortensen said post-game. “As you’ve heard, we have one player in police custody and two players who are in stable condition after sustaining injuries. More than anything, I’m grateful that those two players are in stable condition, and we will make sure that they have the support that they need.”

The UAB Police and Public Safety department is currently conducting an investigation into the events surrounding the incident. Mincey, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound lineman who transferred to UAB after a redshirt year at the University of Kentucky, now faces serious legal repercussions.

Authorities have requested privacy for the affected players and their families as they navigate this challenging situation. The UAB football community continues to rally around those injured, sending their best wishes for a swift recovery.
