URGENT UPDATE: A delivery driver has been sentenced to six years in prison after causing the tragic death of a seven-year-old girl in a head-on collision during a reckless overtaking maneuver. Veselin Dudenski, aged 39, was delivering parcels when he crashed his white Citroen Relay van into a blue Kia Rio on January 3, 2023, in Nocton, Lincolnshire.
The accident occurred on Metheringham Heath Lane as Dudenski attempted a dangerous overtake, resulting in a catastrophic collision that left young Elsie Gascoigne critically injured. She succumbed to her injuries the following day in the hospital, while her father, who was driving, faces permanent injuries from the crash.
During the sentencing at Lincoln Crown Court, Dudenski was also disqualified from driving for eight years and faces potential deportation due to his status as a foreign national. He sat in the dock wearing a blue and white striped shirt, visibly distraught as family members of Elsie attended the hearing.
Prosecutor Claire Holmes detailed the events leading up to the crash, noting that Dudenski’s overtake took place near a hidden dip in the road, which was marked with warning signs. “A careful and competent driver should have been fully aware of the hidden dip,” Holmes stated. She emphasized that had Dudenski waited, he would have noticed the Kia approaching from the opposite direction.
In an emotional statement, Elsie’s parents expressed their grief, stating, “Losing Elsie is not just the loss of a child, it’s the loss of our entire future.” They highlighted the profound impact of her absence, saying their lives have been irrevocably changed.
Dudenski, who has been a professional driver for 17 years, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. His defense lawyer, Charles Myatt, argued that Dudenski believed the road was clear when he initiated the overtake, admitting that he failed to observe critical warning signs.
Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight condemned Dudenski’s actions, stating, “You simply did not take the time and care you needed to ensure that when you crossed the center line into the other carriageway it was clear.”
