Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the resignation of his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, following a high-profile corruption investigation that has rocked the government. This development comes after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) conducted a search of Yermak’s office on November 28, 2023, amid growing scrutiny regarding alleged corruption within the presidential administration.
Zelensky’s decision to restructure his office appears to be a response to the largest corruption scandal during his presidency, implicating several close associates. Earlier this month, NABU charged eight individuals connected to a scheme within the state nuclear company, Energoatom. Among those accused is Timur Mindich, a key ally of Zelensky, who has been identified as the organizer of the alleged fraud.
In a speech shared on his Telegram channel, President Zelensky expressed gratitude towards Yermak for his representation of Ukraine’s interests during negotiations. “I am thankful to Andriy for always representing the Ukrainian position as it should be. It has always been a patriotic stance. But I want to avoid rumors and speculation,” he said, as reported by The Guardian. He indicated that consultations would be held to identify Yermak’s successor.
Zelensky emphasized the need for “internal strength” in Ukraine, particularly during critical discussions about a potential peace agreement. Yermak had amassed significant power within the presidential office, which raised concerns and calls for his resignation intensified after revelations of his attempts to undermine the independence of both NABU and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) in July.
