URGENT UPDATE: A significant incident has caused major disruptions on the A55 eastbound near the Ewloe junction after a lorry’s curtain was violently blown into an overhead gantry. The alarming event was reported shortly after 3:30 PM on October 16, 2023, leading to immediate lane closures and extensive traffic delays.
Traffic Wales confirmed that the lorry, traveling towards the A494, lost its curtain, which subsequently struck the gantry, prompting authorities to close one lane initially. As traffic officers rushed to the scene, they decided to shut down the entire eastbound direction to safely remove debris from the roadway. This closure has resulted in traffic backing up significantly, with queues extending beyond the junction for Northop.
Witnesses described the scene as ‘absolutely terrifying.’ One driver recounted, “I’m so glad no one was hurt. A huge thank you to those behind me who acted quickly when visibility dropped.” The quick actions of other drivers likely prevented what could have been a much worse situation.
The road was finally reopened at approximately 4:30 PM, after traffic officers successfully cleared the debris. However, the delays had already created a ripple effect, stranding many motorists for an extended period.
This incident is just one of several traffic disruptions reported in North East Wales today. Authorities are also investigating multiple collisions in Wrexham, including two accidents on the A541 Mold Road near the A483 junction and another on the A534.
Motorists are advised to remain vigilant and seek alternative routes as further updates are expected. The situation is developing rapidly, and local traffic authorities are working diligently to restore normalcy.
