UPDATE: A heroic manager at the Veterans at Ease charity shop in Byker, Newcastle, bravely fought off a robber armed with a screwdriver during a shocking incident on August 24, 2023. The manager, Karl Badenhorst, confronted Christopher Cook while he attempted to break into the store’s safe, turning a potentially deadly situation into a display of courage.
At around 8:00 AM local time, Badenhorst arrived at the shop to find Cook inside, attempting to access the safe with a screwdriver. When Badenhorst questioned him, Cook reacted violently, trying to stab him with the tool. In a split-second decision, Badenhorst wrestled him to the ground, disarming him and subsequently calling the police.
Authorities report that Cook had already caused significant damage, breaking into the shop through the roof and stealing around £3,000 worth of cash and jewelry before Badenhorst intervened. Cook, 46, later pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to three years in prison by Newcastle Crown Court this week.
Badenhorst, who has been managing the charity shop for just a month, expressed relief that he was able to prevent further harm. “I’m just glad that he can’t go out and terrorize other stores again,” he stated. “If he serves the full three years, I would feel that justice has been done.”
Witnesses report that the shop staff were understandably shaken by the incident. Badenhorst emphasized the potential danger had the situation unfolded differently, especially if one of his female colleagues had been present alone. “It’s an eerie feeling knowing the store was broken into like that,” he said.
Cook was apprehended shortly after the incident, found near a local Greggs with stolen items still in his possession. According to the police, he displayed signs of intoxication and admitted to being a “full-time burglar.” His defense attorney stated that Cook felt deep remorse for committing such an offense against a charity serving veterans.
Judge Tom Moran remarked on Badenhorst’s bravery, noting, “He grabbed you to try to detain you and fought with you. You tried to stab him, and he took you to the floor and disarmed you.” The court heard that Cook had relapsed into substance abuse following the overdose death of his partner.
As this incident raises questions about safety in community spaces, Badenhorst plans to join the Royal Marines in June next year, continuing his commitment to serving others.
