Visitors to hospitals in the greater Glasgow area are now required to wear face masks due to a significant increase in flu cases. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has reported a rising number of patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms, prompting health officials to take preventative measures to protect vulnerable patients.
In line with recommendations from the Infection Prevention and Control Teams, all visitors and clinical staff in hospital settings must wear Fluid Resistant Surgical Masks. This is similar to the protocols implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic. The health board emphasized that these measures aim to reduce the spread of the virus and protect those at higher risk.
Protecting Patients and Encouraging Vaccination
Professor Angela Wallace, Executive Director of Nursing at NHSGGC, stated, “Flu season is here, and we want to ensure that you, your loved ones, and those who are the most vulnerable stay protected.” She urged visitors to wear masks when entering hospital grounds and to adhere to guidance if they exhibit symptoms of the flu.
Health authorities also stressed the importance of vaccination as the best defense against flu. Eligible individuals will receive invitations for their flu vaccines, which are crucial in preventing severe illness. For those who may have missed their appointments, many community pharmacies are offering vaccinations, and mobile clinics are available throughout NHSGGC for walk-ins without prior appointments.
In addition to vaccination efforts, NHSGGC has issued guidance for individuals experiencing mild to moderate flu-like symptoms. They are advised not to attend Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments or visit hospitalized friends and family. Instead, the following recommendations have been provided:
– Consider staying home and using online self-help resources to manage symptoms. NHS Inform and the NHS 24 app can provide guidance.
– For medical advice, contact your GP surgery or visit a community pharmacy without an appointment for symptom assessment.
– If urgent care is needed outside regular hours, call 111 for assistance from NHS 24, available 24 hours a day.
Ongoing Review of Health Measures
The situation regarding flu cases and hospital protocols will continue to be monitored closely by NHSGGC. The health board is committed to adapting measures as necessary to ensure patient safety. For further information on vaccination programs, individuals can visit the NHSGGC Winter Vaccination Programme webpage for the 2025/26 season.
As flu cases rise, the cooperation of both healthcare staff and visitors will play a vital role in safeguarding the health of all patients, particularly those who are vulnerable.
