UPDATE: Weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds are now in effect across Wales and south-west England, raising concerns for potential travel disruptions. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for high winds affecting areas from Dorset to Cornwall and up to north Wales, effective from 10 PM on December 11, 2023 until 4 PM on December 12, 2023.
Travel networks are likely to experience significant disruptions, especially for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges. Coastal roads and seafronts may also be impacted due to large waves and spray. Additionally, power outages are a possibility as the storm intensifies.
A broader yellow rain warning has been issued, extending east to Hampshire and Oxfordshire, starting at 6 PM on December 11, 2023 and lasting until 6 PM on December 12, 2023. This warning highlights the risk of flooding in homes and businesses, with some communities potentially cut off. Another rain warning is in effect for north-west England from midnight on Tuesday until 3 PM, while a wind warning is set for north-west Scotland from 3 PM on December 12 until 10 AM on December 13.
The Met Office warns that “fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life,” urging the public to stay vigilant. As of early Monday morning, there were already twelve flood warnings in place across England.
Gusts of up to 40 mph impacted parts of the south coast, with emergency services responding to incidents such as a garage roof detaching in Seaford, East Sussex. Meteorologist Dan Holley stated, “While there is some uncertainty regarding the exact track and intensity of the low-pressure system approaching western Scotland, many areas in the UK are expected to see persistent rain that, given already saturated ground, could lead to flooding and travel delays.”
As the weather situation develops, the Met Office assures that they are closely monitoring conditions and may issue further updates. The forecast for the remainder of December indicates continued unsettled weather, with further low-pressure systems expected. However, it remains too early for an accurate prediction regarding the Christmas period.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation evolves, and ensure to take precautions if you are in affected areas.
