The New Saints FC Foundation Seeks £10,000 to Sustain Local Youth Hub

UPDATE: The New Saints FC Foundation urgently requests a £10,000 contribution from the town council to maintain operations at The Centre Spot, a vital youth and community space in Oak Street. This appeal comes as the foundation officially takes over the management of the facility, previously owned by Shropshire Council, and highlights an immediate financial challenge.

The Foundation reports that it is actively collaborating with local organizations, such as Obertelli Play Therapy and SoundLives Youth Music, which utilize the building for essential services. However, rising operational costs, estimated between £3,500 to £4,000 per month, threaten the sustainability of these programs.

In a letter to the town council, Gill Jones, manager and trustee of the foundation, stressed the urgency of the request: “We appreciate this is a massive ask partway through the council’s financial year, but the unforeseen financial situation of a key partner and delayed roof repairs have severely impacted our ability to generate necessary revenues.”

The foundation has initiated community lunch services and youth café operations, extending hours to accommodate local youth, particularly on Tuesday evenings. However, the ongoing roof repairs—scheduled to complete by mid to late February—restrict the use of several rooms, further limiting revenue-generating opportunities.

Jones elaborated, “Our numbers are growing weekly, but we face a significant revenue ‘hump’ until larger funding applications are finalized and until we can maximize rentals of available space.” The charity has identified potential funding sources and is in the process of submitting small funding applications.

The foundation is also collaborating with St John Ambulance to ensure utility costs are recovered, while Alcoholics Anonymous has recently commenced weekly sessions at the venue. In addition, a recent designation as a Warm Welcome hub will aid in covering some utility costs, providing a crucial lifeline during winter months.

With the council expected to deliberate on the request this Wednesday, December 10, the foundation remains hopeful for support. “Our aim is to create a safe, welcoming environment for youth, offering new initiatives such as peer support groups, training, and arts programs,” Jones stated.

The appeal to the town council is pivotal for the foundation’s mission to enhance community wellbeing and youth engagement. The urgency of this funding request underscores the foundation’s commitment to overcoming immediate financial hurdles and ensuring the facility remains a cornerstone for community support.

As the discussions unfold, all eyes will be on the town council’s response, which could determine the future of The Centre Spot and its invaluable contributions to the local community.
