Colwyn Bay Civic Centre to Transform into Hotel Within 2 Years

UPDATE: The long-awaited redevelopment of Colwyn Bay’s historic Civic Centre is officially back on track, with plans for transformation into a 53-bed apart hotel set to begin within the next two years. Businessman Robin Brookes of Eirias Coastal Park Hotel Ltd confirmed that preparatory work has commenced on the site, which has remained derelict for several years.

The developer’s announcement comes amid ongoing frustrations from local residents, who have expressed their dissatisfaction over the building’s prolonged deterioration. Old Colwyn councillor David Carr voiced concerns during a recent finance and resources scrutiny committee, highlighting that the community is “very unhappy” with the sale price of £250,000 and the stalled promise of a new hotel.

“We are converting the Civic Centre into a 53-bed apart hotel with 50 electric vehicle charging points and a 24-hour vending shop. At the moment, we are trying to get the infrastructure in place. This should be completed within two years,”

said Robert Roberts of Eirias Coastal Park Hotel Ltd.

The Civic Centre has faced a turbulent history since council staff vacated the building in 2018 for new offices. Following a failed attempt to convert it into a four-star hotel, the building fell further into disrepair, prompting Conwy County Council to take enforcement action. In a statement, the council confirmed that a Section 215 notice was issued due to the deteriorating condition, resulting in a guilty plea and a fine of £1,050 against the previous owners.

Officials revealed that previous redevelopment attempts were hampered by economic conditions and escalating costs. While the property is now in third-party ownership, the council cannot compel the new owner to commence renovations. However, they noted that the new owners have been actively engaging with them regarding the future of the site.

Despite these developments, the Civic Centre remains boarded up and overgrown, leaving the community anxious for progress. The council acknowledged that challenges in finding a viable solution have persisted, but the latest plans from Eirias Coastal Park Hotel Ltd offer a glimmer of hope.

As preparations for this new apart hotel move forward, attention will remain focused on the timeline and community reaction. Residents are eager to see tangible changes, and the pressure is mounting for the developer to deliver on promises that have lingered too long.

This redevelopment could not only revitalize a historic landmark but also address local concerns and provide much-needed amenities for the area. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
