BREAKING: Juno Films has just secured all North American rights to the acclaimed film ‘Cielo’, a magical realist fable directed by Alberto Sciamma. This thrilling acquisition comes after the film’s success at both Fantasia Fest and Fantasporto, where it captured multiple prestigious awards.
The film stars Fernanda Gutierrez Aranda as Santa, a young orphan hailing from the Bolivian Altiplano. In a gripping narrative, Santa flees her abusive home, carrying her mother’s body in a barrel of salt. Her quest to find the road to Heaven and resurrect her mother is both heart-wrenching and fantastical. Along the way, she is guided by a fish she swallows alive and encounters a variety of unforgettable characters, including a priest, a bus full of Cholia fighters, and a sorrowful police chief mourning the loss of his wife.
This cinematic gem has been recognized widely, winning the Special Jury Prize and audience award at Fantasporto, along with the Best Cinematography Award at the Cheval Noir competition during Fantasia Fest. John Dunton-Downer, Alexa Waugh, and Bettina Kadoorie produced the film, which has captivated audiences and critics alike.
Juno Films negotiated the deal with Caroline Couret-Delègue, president of Film Seekers, and plans to feature ‘Cielo’ at film festivals before its national theatrical premiere set for spring 2026.
