A small number of schools in Aberdeenshire have reduced their operating hours in response to a rise in flu-related illnesses among students and staff. The Aberdeenshire Council announced that some pupils will participate in online lessons from home due to the increased number of absences. The council reported that the absence rates are currently at “higher than normal” levels, prompting this significant adjustment in school schedules.
The decision aligns with similar measures being implemented across the UK, where some schools have adopted Covid-like precautions to help mitigate the spread of the flu virus. A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council stated, “A small number of primary schools and academies across Aberdeenshire are feeling the impact of increased flu-related illness. We are monitoring the situation very closely and remain in regular contact with affected schools.”
Schools are making concerted efforts to ensure adequate staffing to cover classes. However, when absence levels reach concerning heights and no available cover exists, certain classes or year groups may be required to stay at home and engage in online learning.
Health Officials Warn of Flu Spike
The announcement regarding reduced school hours coincides with a warning from Scotland’s Health Secretary Neil Gray, who indicated that flu cases are expected to rise significantly in the coming weeks. Gray noted that the current rates of infection are following a pattern similar to last year’s surge. According to figures from Public Health Scotland (PHS), flu cases doubled in the week ending November 30, 2023.
In light of this situation, Gray is encouraging individuals eligible for a flu vaccine to take advantage of the opportunity. He also advised those who can afford it to consider getting a private vaccine. The government is taking proactive steps to manage the flu outbreak, especially as hospitals in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the Western Isles have mandated that staff and visitors wear face masks in wards. This precaution is intended to minimize the risk of infection and protect vulnerable patients.
PHS’s viral respiratory diseases surveillance report revealed that more than 700 individuals were hospitalised due to flu-related illnesses between November 24 and 30, 2023. As the health crisis unfolds, authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and take appropriate preventive measures.
