Manchester Motorways Face Rush Hour Gridlock Following Multiple Incidents

Commuters in Manchester experienced significant delays this morning as multiple incidents disrupted traffic on several major motorways. As of December 11, motorists faced congestion on the M6, M56, M60, and M62 due to four separate events that contributed to the chaos.

On the M60, the clockwise carriageway at junction 27 for Portwood is currently partially blocked, causing delays for drivers en route to Stockport. The traffic is backed up past Denton Island at junction 24, leading to challenging conditions for those commuting in the area.

Additionally, lengthy queues have formed on the M6 southbound near the Thelwall Viaduct, close to Warrington, following a collision. Traffic has begun to tail back to junction 23 for the East Lancs Road, near St Helens, while onlookers have contributed to slowing traffic on the northbound side.

The M62 eastbound is also experiencing significant delays, particularly between junctions 11 at Birchwood and 12 at the M60 Eccles Interchange. According to the traffic monitoring service Inrix, this disruption is due to an obstruction on the road.

Another incident is affecting the M56 eastbound, where a lane is closed between junctions six at Bowdon and seven at Hale due to a breakdown. This situation is causing hold-ups for drivers heading towards Manchester Airport and the city centre, as reported by local sources.

Motorists on the M61 southbound towards the M60 are encountering further congestion, with queues extending back to junction four near Bolton. Additionally, those traveling on the M60 anticlockwise from Simister Island to junction 12 of the M62 are facing the usual rush hour delays.

As of the latest updates, all lanes have reopened on the M6 southbound at the Thelwall Viaduct and the M60 clockwise at Portwood; however, queues persist in these areas. A lane remains closed on the M56 eastbound due to the earlier breakdown, while the obstruction on the M62 eastbound has also been reported as partially blocked, according to Inrix.

Although the incidents have been cleared, the typical rush hour traffic continues to create delays on both motorways. Local authorities and traffic services are advising drivers to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel.
