A record seven films from Scotland have been selected for the esteemed Sundance Film Festival, set to take place in Park City, Utah from January 22 to February 1, 2026. This selection highlights the growing recognition of Scottish talent in the global film industry, with five of the films receiving support from Screen Scotland.
Among the standout entries is The Incomer, directed by Louis Paxton, which will open the Next category, dedicated to innovative and independent films. The film, set on a Scottish island, follows two siblings as they strive to keep their home free from “incomers.” Paxton expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Incomer has been a joy to bring to life alongside an immensely talented team. I am thrilled to share it with US audiences at Sundance.”
Also featured in the festival is Lady, directed by Olive Nwosu and produced by Alex Polunin. This film will compete in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. Another notable entry is Everybody to Kenmure Street, directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra and produced by Ciara Barry. This documentary recounts a Home Office dawn raid that ignited a civil resistance movement in Glasgow. Barry highlighted the film’s message, saying, “It celebrates the power of community… we are excited to share this film with international audiences.”
In the special screenings segment, The Story of Documentary, directed by Mark Cousins and produced by John Archer, will explore the evolution of documentary filmmaking. Other Scottish titles in the lineup include Filipiñana, produced by Alex Polunin, and Extra Geography, co-produced by Wendy Griffin.
The selection of these films underscores the commitment of Screen Scotland to support original storytelling. Isabel Davis, executive director of Screen Scotland, remarked, “Every one of these titles is entertaining, urgent, and creatively uncompromising. It’s rewarding to see Scotland’s creative achievements reflected in Sundance’s programme.”
Scotland’s Culture Secretary, Angus Robertson, also praised the recognition, stating, “I am really pleased to see these films selected for the Sundance Film Festival, showcasing the incredible breadth of creativity in Scotland.” He emphasized the Scottish Government’s commitment to expanding the screen sector, which is increasingly producing ambitious projects that resonate on the global stage.
With a diverse array of films and powerful storytelling, the Scottish presence at the Sundance Film Festival promises to captivate audiences and further elevate the country’s film industry.
