Montenegrin artist Miomir Vemic presents his latest exhibition titled “Reaction to the Void” at the Crowne Plaza Podgorica, running until December 25, 2023. The exhibition embodies a profound exploration of the emptiness he perceives in contemporary society. Vemic’s work transcends traditional boundaries, merging life and art into a powerful commentary on the human condition.
In a recent interview, Vemic articulated his view of the void as a state of hopelessness prevalent in the world today. He described the current climate as “apocalyptic,” overwhelmed by conflicts and a sense of despair. “The modern world is sinking irretrievably,” he stated. Vemic aims to express this “silent scream” through his vibrant canvases, which often feature horses as central figures, representing energy and resistance.
Exploring the Silent Scream
Vemic’s exhibition title, “Reaction to the Void,” serves as both metaphor and state of being. It reflects his struggle against the silence of the blank canvas and the larger cultural emptiness he observes. “What I do is paint; I express my silent scream through my work,” he explained. His pieces are intended to serve as testimonies to the era in which we live, provided humanity survives the turmoil of today.
When asked about the significance of the horse, a recurring motif in his art, Vemic shared that it symbolizes not merely an animal but a being that embodies his spirit. “The energy of this being has accompanied me throughout my life,” he said. The horse’s representation in his work is a form of self-portraiture, capturing his emotions and experiences.
Vemic’s artistic journey began in his childhood on the Sinjajevina plateau, where he formed a deep connection with the natural world. “That horse was black as coal, carrying my soul across the slopes of Sinjajevina,” he reminisced. His childhood memories, including the echo of his grandfather’s horse, continue to influence his creative expression.
A Call for Artistic Integrity
Despite the political and social reality in Montenegro, Vemic strives to maintain independence in his work. He expressed concern over trends in the art world, emphasizing that artists should not conform to prevailing styles or market demands. “The essence of art lies within the human experience, in sincerity,” he asserted. Vemic believes that an artist should create from their lived experiences, rather than adhere to the fleeting whims of contemporary trends.
While acknowledging the pervasive influence of politics on art, Vemic remains committed to his principles. He has consciously distanced himself from political affiliations, valuing artistic authenticity over societal expectations. “I have never been approached by any political party, nor would I accept such an invitation,” he stated, reflecting his desire to remain true to his artistic vision.
Vemic’s insights resonate with many aspiring artists in Montenegro, where opportunities can be scarce. He highlighted the urgent need for state support for the arts, advocating for annual acquisitions of artworks to help emerging talents. “The government should provide artists with basic resources to continue their work,” he emphasized.
As Vemic’s exhibition continues to draw attention, his work stands as a powerful reminder of the role of art in confronting societal challenges. Through “Reaction to the Void,” he not only explores his internal landscapes but also invites viewers to reflect on the world around them. His commitment to authenticity and engagement speaks to the enduring power of art as a means of resistance and expression.
