Free Reading Support for Adults Launched by Shropshire Group

Adults in Shropshire seeking assistance with reading now have access to free, confidential, one-on-one coaching through Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East. This initiative, which began in 2019, aims to empower individuals by enhancing their reading abilities, enabling them to manage everyday tasks such as reading letters, completing forms, and applying for jobs.

Volunteers have played a crucial role in supporting over 50 adults in East Shropshire, helping them gain confidence in their reading skills. The group recently celebrated its twelfth graduation, marking the completion of the program by participants. This achievement underscores the significant impact of the initiative on local communities.

Empowering Families and Communities

A spokesperson for the organization highlighted the emotional importance of reading for adults, stating, “Imagine being able to share a bedtime story with your children and grandchildren for the very first time.” The program offers a friendly and engaging environment, with coaching sessions held in local community centers, including libraries. Participants can attend two 30-minute sessions each week, receiving all necessary training and resources at no cost.

The need for such support is reflected in statistics indicating that approximately 16 percent of the adult population in the region struggles with low literacy skills. The group actively encourages those in need to reach out for help. Additionally, the recent emphasis by the government on reading as part of the upcoming 2026 National Year of Reading campaign highlights the broader societal importance of literacy, particularly in fostering strong family connections.

Join the Movement: Volunteer Opportunities Available

Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East is also on the lookout for individuals to join their mission. They are seeking Volunteer Reading Coaches and members for their management team, offering a variety of roles to suit different interests and skills.
