In a spirited display of camaraderie and teamwork, 134 new S1 pupils from Oban participated in the 19th edition of a celebrated overnight event at the Atlantis Leisure Centre. The gathering, which took place on October 20, 2023, aimed to foster connections among students as they embark on their secondary education journey.
The event kicked off with a welcome speech from the school principal, who emphasized the importance of building friendships and memories during these formative years. Activities included team-building exercises, sports, and creative workshops designed to engage the students and encourage collaboration. As night fell, the excitement only grew, transforming the leisure centre into a hub of laughter and enthusiasm.
Participating students took part in a variety of challenges that tested their skills, from sports competitions to problem-solving tasks. One of the highlights was a scavenger hunt that led teams through the facility, encouraging them to explore and work together. Each activity was carefully designed to promote teamwork and resilience, essential traits for their upcoming years in school.
As midnight approached, the atmosphere buzzed with energy. Students gathered for a late-night snack, sharing stories and experiences. This informal setting allowed them to bond further, creating friendships that many hope will last throughout their school life.
The event was not only a chance for fun but also an opportunity for personal growth. Teachers observed students stepping out of their comfort zones, taking on leadership roles, and supporting their peers. One teacher remarked, “It’s incredible to see the transformation in such a short time. They’re learning to rely on each other and build trust, which is vital as they start this new chapter.”
With 2023 marking the 19th consecutive year of this tradition, the overnight challenge has become a key aspect of the school’s approach to integrating new students. Organisers expressed their satisfaction with the turnout and the positive feedback received from both students and parents.
Parents, too, were enthusiastic about the event. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to their children. One parent noted, “This event is fantastic. It helps the kids make friends in a fun and safe environment. I can see how excited my child is to go to school now.”
The success of this year’s overnight event at the Atlantis Leisure Centre illustrates the importance of such initiatives in fostering a supportive school community. As the students settle into their new environment, they carry with them not just memories from one night, but the promise of lasting friendships and a strong foundation for their future.
