Students Experience Real-World Insights at Vodafone Apprentice Day

Over 120 students from schools across West Berkshire engaged in a hands-on experience at Vodafone’s headquarters in Newbury, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths. On January 14, 2024, pupils from St Bart’s, Trinity, Park House, and St Gabriel’s participated in an apprenticeship insight and assessment day designed to simulate the realities of an apprenticeship process.

The event, which has grown from its inception in 2023 with just 20 participants, aimed to provide students with a supportive environment while offering a glimpse into early career opportunities. Vodafone apprentices, including Charlie Thomas and Jake Randall, played pivotal roles in organizing the day, reflecting their commitment to inspiring the next generation.

Mr. Randall, who started as an apprentice himself, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “We launched this event as fresh-faced 18-year-old apprentices, driven by a belief in the power of apprenticeships and a desire to challenge misconceptions. What began with 20 students has grown into an event with 120 participants, supported by 79 colleagues, many current or former apprentices giving back.”

Participants heard from Adam Hyde, Vodafone’s business tech director, who shared his journey beginning as an apprentice in 1995. He expressed his enthusiasm for mentoring young aspirants: “Today truly reflects Vodafone’s culture and commitment to early careers and has shown ambitious apprentices what’s possible through passion, support, and opportunity.”

The packed agenda included activities similar to a real apprenticeship assessment process. Students rotated through four interactive exercises: a one-on-one behavioural interview, a group presentation task, a cognitive group exercise focusing on communication and problem-solving, and a Q&A session with a panel of past and present apprentices.

James Wilder, Head of Sixth Form at St Bart’s, highlighted the growing interest among students in pursuing apprenticeships. He noted, “The Apprenticeship Mock Assessment Centre Day is a beacon of best practice with business and schools connecting to inspire the next generation.” Mr. Wilder also referenced alumni Owen Chetwood, who credits his participation in an earlier masterclass for motivating him to apply for a position at Vodafone.

Students reflected positively on their experiences. Paritosh Madduru from Trinity School described the day as “engaging and vibrant,” while Danio Page added, “Today was really informative, and helped me with next steps for the future.”

Looking ahead, Vodafone is expected to offer apprenticeship opportunities in February, including positions in field engineering, data analytics, and network engineering. This initiative not only cultivates local talent but also strengthens the connection between education and the professional world, paving the way for future generations to succeed in their careers.
