UCG Gender Studies Condemn Violent Breach of Privacy Rights

The Gender Studies department at the University of Montenegro has firmly condemned the violent exposure of private details regarding Mirjana Pajković in public forums. This incident, along with the attacks and threats directed at journalist Jelena Jovanović, has been described as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the safety of women in both public and digital spaces.

In a statement, the Gender Studies department emphasized that the breach of Pajković’s privacy is not merely a “scandal,” but a manifestation of gender-based violence. This form of violence employs a woman’s intimacy as a means of public discreditation and social stigmatization. The department noted, “Such practices reveal how women’s bodies remain vulnerable to political and social reckoning.”

The department also expressed particular concern over the harassment faced by Jovanović, who continues to perform her duties professionally despite facing intimidation and pressure. They asserted that the attacks on her do not reflect freedom of speech but rather constitute attempts to silence her and undermine the public’s right to information. “Female journalists covering sensitive topics are especially vulnerable to gender-motivated attacks due to their professional integrity,” the statement added.

Furthermore, the Gender Studies department reminded the public that the right to privacy and protection from gender-based violence is guaranteed by international conventions, including the European Convention on Human Rights and the Istanbul Convention.

They called for the immediate removal of content that unlawfully infringes on individual privacy, along with institutional protection for victims of digital and gender-based violence. The department demanded a clear and unequivocal condemnation of attacks on journalists by relevant authorities. “These are not ‘affairs’ but acts of violence. This is not about private matters, but about public accountability and the defense of fundamental human rights,” they concluded.

The call to action highlights the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and the necessity of safeguarding journalistic integrity in the face of rampant societal issues. As incidents like these arise, it becomes increasingly critical for institutions and governments to reaffirm their commitment to protecting individuals from gender-based violence and ensuring safe environments for all members of society.
