Tributes Flow as Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield Passes at 63

The music world mourns the loss of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, bassist for iconic bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, who passed away at the age of 63. His brother, Greg Mounfield, confirmed the news on November 20, 2023, through a heartfelt Facebook post. He expressed his grief with the words, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.”

In his touching message, Greg noted that Mani is now “reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.” This poignant remark highlights the recent loss of Imelda, who passed away from bowel cancer earlier this year, following her diagnosis in 2020. The couple’s bond and shared journey resonate deeply in the wake of this tragedy.

In a recent update on November 22, Greg shared a moving photograph on social media featuring Mani, Imelda, and their family. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of condolences, stating, “On behalf of myself and all my family Mounfield/McGill, I would like to say a massive thanks for all the messages and tributes to RKid. RIP Gaz.”

The family’s mourning is compounded by the loss of both parents, as Greg’s stepbrother, John Barlow, reflected on the impact of Mani’s death. He shared a childhood photo of the three brothers on Facebook, stating, “Absolutely devastated to hear of the sudden passing of my step brother Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield.” He emphasized the tragedy of the situation, noting that it leaves the two boys without a mother or father.

Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, originally from Crumpsall in Manchester, rose to fame as a member of The Stone Roses during the 1980s. He contributed to both of the band’s acclaimed albums before their split in 1996. Afterward, he joined Primal Scream, later returning to The Stone Roses in 2011 for a reunion.

Following the announcement of his passing, numerous tributes have poured in from across the music industry. Ian Brown, lead singer of The Stone Roses, paid homage with a simple yet poignant message: “REST IN PEACE MANi X.” The Stone Roses collectively expressed their sorrow, stating, “RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for.”

As the music community reflects on Mani’s immense contributions, his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of musicians and fans alike.
