Fans of ITV’s popular quiz show, The Chase, voiced their confusion during the recently aired Christmas special episode. The festive installment featured four celebrities competing for charity, but viewers quickly raised questions about the show’s theme, which combined elements of both Christmas and Halloween.
The episode, hosted by Bradley Walsh, featured celebrities Kate Silverton, Ruthie Henshall, Iain Stirling, and the Rev Richard Coles. Although marketed as a Christmas special, Walsh introduced it as a “fancy dress special” inspired by The Addams Family. This unusual combination left many fans puzzled.
Viewers took to social media platforms, particularly X, to express their bewilderment. Some questioned the relevance of a Halloween theme during the Christmas season. One user remarked, “Is this a Christmas special or a Halloween special?” Others echoed similar sentiments, noting the odd pairing of spooky decorations with festive elements.
Anne Hegerty, known as The Governess, added to the whimsical atmosphere by dressing as Morticia Addams, complete with a long black sequined gown and dramatic makeup. This choice sparked even more discussion among fans, who noted the incongruity of her attire against a backdrop of Christmas decorations.
As the gameplay progressed, Kate Silverton took her turn during the Cash Builder round. She faced off against The Governess and managed to secure £4,000 for her team. The Reverend Richard Coles followed, showcasing his impressive general knowledge by earning a significant £8,000 during his round. He opted for a risky offer of £90,000 but was ultimately caught by The Chaser, Shaun Wallace, known as The Dark Destroyer.
Ruthie Henshall then stepped up, successfully earning a place in the final chase with an additional £1,000 for the team, bringing their total to £5,000. Finally, Iain Sterling attempted to outsmart The Chaser, Paul Sinha, also known as The Sinnerman. He secured £4,000 and chose to accept the top offer of £175,000.
In the climactic final chase, Sterling and his teammates faced off against Mark Labbett, also known as The Beast. Despite their best efforts, they scored only 15 points, ultimately falling short and being caught with 35 seconds remaining.
The episode concluded with the celebrities leaving empty-handed, despite their entertaining efforts. As viewers reflect on the unique blend of themes, it remains to be seen how the show will approach future festive specials.
