Sieira explains, “A bacterial biofilm forms— the bacteria secrete a kind of ‘glue’ to shield themselves, making them resistant to various treatments intended to eradicate them.” While poor oral hygiene is the leading cause, other factors such as infections, trauma, or systemic health issues, including viral or fungal conditions, can also contribute to gingivitis.

Natural Treatments for Swollen Gums

To combat gingivitis effectively, Sieira emphasizes the importance of eliminating bacterial plaque. She recommends several home remedies that can complement regular oral hygiene practices to relieve symptoms.

Lemongrass is highlighted for its effectiveness in reducing plaque. To create a mouthwash, dilute five drops of lemongrass essential oil with one teaspoon of 70 percent ethyl alcohol in seven tablespoons of water. Rinse your mouth with this mixture three times a day, but ensure it is never swallowed.

Another promising option is aloe vera, which has been shown in recent studies to improve gingivitis symptoms without adverse effects. Rinsing with pure aloe vera juice sourced from a reputable supplier can help reduce plaque build-up.

Sage also offers benefits due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. To prepare a sage mouthwash, mix two tablespoons of fresh sage or one teaspoon of dried sage with one teaspoon of salt in two cups of water. Simmer for five minutes, strain, and allow it to cool. This rinse can be used two to three times daily.

The practice of oil pulling with coconut oil is gaining traction as an effective natural remedy. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, known for its strong antibacterial properties. To perform oil pulling, take approximately 10–15 ml of coconut oil and swish it in your mouth for 20 minutes, ensuring not to swallow it. Afterward, spit the oil into a bin and rinse your mouth with warm water before brushing your teeth.

Chamomile, known for its soothing effects, can be brewed into a strong tea and used as a mouthwash once cooled. This tea has shown comparable efficacy to chlorhexidine in managing gingivitis. Alternatively, applying a damp tea bag directly to the gums can provide immediate relief.

While these natural remedies can be beneficial, Sieira stresses the importance of consulting a dentist if symptoms persist. “If the problem continues, be sure to visit your dentist,” she advises. “A detailed clinical evaluation is essential to identify the exact type of gingivitis, receive an accurate diagnosis, and start appropriate treatment.”
