DNP Pushes for Dual Citizenship and Serbian Language Status

During a meeting held on October 30, 2023, the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) unanimously adopted a resolution to intensify efforts regarding the status of the Serbian language and dual citizenship. The party’s official statement highlighted a commitment to amend the Citizenship Law to address these significant issues.

DNP officials emphasized the need for a national dialogue on these matters, proposing that discussions should commence in the first quarter of 2024. Key figures in the party, including Milun Zogović, the party’s vice president, and members Jelena Kljajević and Dragan Bojović, expressed that constitutional changes are essential for stabilizing the socio-political climate in light of upcoming European challenges.

The party’s statement asserts that “constitutional amendments are not an attack on the state; rather, they are a necessity.” This position aims to foster societal stability and address discrimination against the linguistic majority. The DNP leadership also stated that the government should be the first to propose and adopt any constitutional changes, ensuring that such decisions are institutionalized and can be effectively voted on in the Assembly.

Zogović and his colleagues called for a shift from theoretical readiness to practical action. They urged all key political actors to demonstrate their commitment to halting discrimination and promoting inclusivity within society. The DNP pledged to contribute fully to this process, in alignment with its political strength and publicly declared ideological and political goals.

The DNP’s initiative reflects a broader movement within the region to address the complexities of citizenship and linguistic rights, aiming to unite various factions under a common goal. As discussions progress, the party seeks to engage citizens and stakeholders in a meaningful dialogue that could reshape the political landscape in the months ahead.
