The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently hosted a delegation from the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) at his palace, emphasizing the importance of peace, security, and inter-religious harmony in Kano State and throughout Nigeria. The visit by the executive members and elders of the PFN served as a platform for the Emir to reaffirm his dedication to fostering unity among diverse religious communities.
During the meeting, which took place on October 15, 2023, Sanusi reflected on his formative years, recalling his attendance at a Catholic school. He credited this experience with deepening his appreciation for religious coexistence. “My early education has shaped my understanding of the need for harmony among different faiths,” he stated.
In his remarks, the Emir expressed gratitude for the prevailing peace in Kano State. He urged religious leaders to intensify their prayers for sustained harmony, especially given recent security challenges faced by some border communities. “The role of religious leaders is crucial in maintaining stability and unity at both the state and national levels,” he noted.
Recognition and Commitment to Interfaith Cooperation
The Emir received a Peace Award from the PFN, a gesture that underscores his ongoing efforts to promote peace and inter-religious dialogue. He assured the delegation of his continued support for Christian communities in Kano State, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across faiths.
Earlier in the meeting, Rev. Elkanah Enweluzor, the Kano State Chairman of the PFN, acknowledged the Emir’s leadership. “We recognize that your fatherly posture has been instrumental in the peace we all enjoy in Kano State,” he said. Enweluzor highlighted that the PFN’s Award of Excellence honors the Emir’s commitment to stability and the welfare of the people in the region.
The gathering represents a significant step toward enhancing interfaith relations in Nigeria, a nation characterized by its rich diversity of beliefs. Both leaders underscored the necessity of fostering a spirit of cooperation to ensure lasting peace and understanding among different religious groups.
As discussions around security and communal harmony continue, the Emir’s commitment to inter-religious peace remains a beacon of hope for the residents of Kano State and beyond.
