Man Travels 4,500 Miles to Honor Coventry with Unique Tattoo

A man has made a remarkable journey of over 4,500 miles (approximately 7,200 km) from Colorado, USA, to Coventry, England, to commemorate his hometown with a distinctive tattoo. Mark Rushworth, who relocated to the United States in 2007, returned to the West Midlands to pay tribute to his roots and his beloved football club.

During his visit, Rushworth reached out to Red Riz, a tattoo artist based in Walsgrave, to create a design that features the iconic three spires of Coventry along with the city’s coat of arms. He noted that Riz’s personality and sense of humor were significant factors in his decision to collaborate with her on this personal project.

“I love her personality, loved her sense of humour, and that was what really drew me to reach out to her,” Rushworth stated. He was particularly impressed by the various designs she showcased on her website, describing her work as “incredible.”

Rushworth explained that he had considered several design options, including depictions of the Locarno dance hall, where his parents met, as well as representations of the notable bands and singers associated with Coventry’s vibrant music scene. However, it was Riz’s unique designs that ultimately inspired him and solidified his decision.

In reflecting on the changes in Coventry since his departure, Rushworth highlighted the addition of the Coventry Music Museum as a positive development. “I miss the city, I miss the history – I’m a huge history buff. I love walking round the old cathedral, round Bayley Lane. I miss the pubs, the pub culture,” he remarked.

He also expressed his fondness for the local culinary scene, particularly the renowned curry houses that add to Coventry’s charm. “It’s my city, and I love it,” he added, emphasizing the deep connection he maintains with his hometown despite the miles that separate them.

Rushworth’s journey is a testament to the enduring bonds people hold with their hometowns and the meaningful ways they express their affiliations, even across continents. The tattoo not only serves as a personal tribute to Coventry but also encapsulates his memories and experiences tied to the city.
