The government of Montenegro has announced the introduction of physical security measures in educational institutions across the country from February 1 to June 15, 2026. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on January 22, 2026, and is intended to enhance the safety of students and staff amid rising incidents of violence in schools.
According to the information released by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, the government approved the hiring of physical security personnel for a total of 68 primary schools, 44 secondary schools, and one student dormitory. The initiative aims to prevent violence and other unwanted incidents that have become more frequent in educational settings.
Temporary Security Measures for Enhanced Safety
The physical security will be in place until a systemic solution can be established, which may include the deployment of school resource officers or other forms of security in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This measure is described as temporary but crucial for creating a secure environment conducive to educational processes.
Officials emphasized that the initiative focuses on protecting both children and employees. The Ministry noted that this approach follows a previously successful model of engaging security personnel in schools, which has proven effective in safeguarding educational environments.
The decision to implement these security measures reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns surrounding student safety. By maintaining a secure atmosphere, authorities aim to foster a stable environment for learning and development.
As the implementation date approaches, schools are preparing to integrate these security measures into their daily operations. The government is expected to monitor the situation closely and assess the effectiveness of the initiative, paving the way for a potential long-term strategy to ensure safety in Montenegro’s educational institutions.
