Montenegro’s Vučinić Emphasizes Winning Mindset After Croatia Match

Montenegro’s national football team showcased resilience and skill in their recent match against Croatia, losing narrowly by a score of 2-3. Despite the defeat, the performance offered a glimpse of hope as Montenegro prepares for the UEFA Nations League in 2026, aiming to secure a top position in their group to qualify for the European Championship in 2028.

The match in Podgorica saw Montenegro initially take a commanding lead, scoring twice within the first 17 minutes. However, questions arose regarding their consistency, especially considering their performance over the last two years. Many fans and analysts are wondering why the team has not regularly displayed the same intensity and cohesion seen against Croatia, a team that finished third in the last World Cup.

Mirko Vučinić, the national team coach, received praise from Croatian coach Zlatko Dalić following the match. “Comments from Dalić mean a lot to me, as we know what kind of coach he is and what he has achieved with Croatia,” Vučinić stated. He acknowledged the significance of positive feedback but emphasized his desire for tangible results over mere commendations. “I would prefer to have played much worse and won,” he added, encapsulating his focus on victory.

Reflecting on the match, Vučinić expressed disappointment despite the commendable effort from his players. “I feel more sadness than pride. We played well and fought hard, but details make the difference, and they were not in our favor,” he remarked. Despite the applause from fans for their spirited play, the coach underscored the need for improvement, particularly in critical moments.

Montenegro’s performance against Croatia highlighted their potential but also underscored areas for growth. The team had multiple chances to extend their lead but ultimately left the pitch empty-handed. Vučinić noted, “We have to live for victory because that is the only way we can become competitors.”

As Montenegro prepares for the draw for the C Division of the UEFA Nations League, they will be one of the seeded teams. This status may suggest a favorable position on paper against their rivals, yet Vučinić remains cautious. “It is realistic to say that details will determine our success, not the fact that we will be seen as favorites,” he explained.

The former player took charge of the national team during the October qualifiers, following the departure of Robert Prosinečki. He has expressed confidence in the squad’s capabilities and aims to restore belief in the national team. “When I took over, the situation was not the best, both in terms of results and morale,” he said.

Montenegro’s performance against Croatia, according to Vučinić, demonstrated that the players are capable of giving their all. They must now channel that energy consistently. “I have been pushing the players to work hard and remain united in our efforts,” he emphasized.

As Vučinić continues to build the team, he is determined to instill a winning mindset. “I want them all to feel the desire to play and contribute to the team’s success,” he stated firmly. The journey ahead will require dedication, teamwork, and a relentless pursuit of victory if Montenegro is to realize its potential on the international stage.
