Thousands gathered at Mount Vernon on February 19, 2024, for the Presidents’ Day celebration, which featured free admission and a variety of historical activities across the estate. Visitors paid their respects at George Washington’s Tomb and enjoyed Revolutionary War encampments alongside fife-and-drum performances. The event was designed to engage families with hands-on textile demonstrations and discovery stations, while living-history presentations brought the past to life throughout the grounds.
The program included military demonstrations by the Commander in Chief’s Guard and the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard. Participants also had the opportunity to tour the George Washington Presidential Library, where they could examine original documents related to Washington’s life and leadership.
Exhibition Highlights Washington’s Legacy
A central feature of the day was a new exhibition showcasing three original pieces of clothing worn by George Washington: a coat, waistcoat, and breeches. This display marked the first time these garments have been exhibited together. The clothing items, presented in red, white, and blue, are linked to the upcoming Semiquincentennial celebrations of American independence.
Anne Neal Petri, regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, emphasized the significance of the day, noting, “We also gather this year to celebrate 250 years of independence.” Doug Bradburn, President and CEO of Mount Vernon, explained that the holiday event sought to connect visitors to the themes of leadership and the rule of law. He remarked, “He stepped away, demonstrating that in America, leaders return to private life and power yields to the rule of law.”
The executive director of the library, Lindsay Chervinsky, highlighted the unique access to Washington’s documents, stating, “To see George Washington’s own letters, documents, and papers up close is a rare and powerful experience.” This rare glimpse into the past captivated many attendees, making the event both educational and inspiring.
Looking Forward to Washington’s Birthday Celebration
The impressive turnout at the Presidents’ Day celebration has heightened anticipation for the upcoming birthday festivities on February 22, 2024. This program will include a naturalization ceremony, live music by the Air Force String Quartet, story time, and discovery stations. A hoecake demonstration featuring General Washington, a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb, and an appearance by Tobias Lear are also planned.
Mount Vernon has framed the month’s events as part of a broader initiative, dubbed “America’s 250,” aimed at engaging the public in the nation’s history. Additionally, visitors can explore the newly launched Virginia 250 Passport travel guide, which highlights over 70 historic sites across the state.
As the Mount Vernon Presidents’ Day celebration came to a close, it marked the beginning of a busy and significant period leading up to the events celebrating Washington’s birthday, reinforcing the estate’s role as a vital center for American history and education.
