A unique cottage in the village of Haslingfield, near Cambridge, is now on the market for £450,000. The property, owned by Robert Petryszak, features an extraordinary exterior adorned with 139 plywood artworks. Each piece showcases a variety of subjects, including portraits of people, animals, and floral still-life, turning the cottage into a notable local attraction.
The 19th-century home became an artistic canvas during the COVID-19 lockdown, when Petryszak began creating the murals to combat the isolation of working from home. “The pandemic has done different things to different people,” he explained. “I was working from home throughout the lockdown and staring at my blank walls.” Starting with sketches behind the fence to avoid disturbing neighbors, he gradually expanded his work to cover the gabled walls of the house.
Over four years, the artwork caught the attention of passersby, transforming the cottage into a vibrant display that has become a topic of conversation in the village. Petryszak reflects on his journey as an artist, stating, “It’s an outward illustration of my journey learning to paint.” He draws inspiration from social media, particularly Instagram, where he discovers subjects to depict in his art.
Property Features and Community Reception
In addition to its striking murals, the cottage offers four bedrooms, a spacious dining room with French doors leading to the garden, and two bathrooms. There is also a separate home office/music room, which Petryszak notes can be utilized as a fifth bedroom if needed. The property is listed with estate agents Emoov.
Petryszak has decided to sell this unique home after 25 years of residency. He expressed his hope that the new owners will appreciate the artwork as much as the community does. “When I was painting, I wasn’t sure if I were to move away, if people would want them. But now I can leave them with the house, knowing they’ll stay. It’s become part of the fabric of the village,” he said.
The cottage, often referred to as ‘The Portraits House’ on Google Maps, has garnered a reputation as a local tourist attraction. Its whimsical character and artistic charm have resonated with residents and visitors alike, making it a beloved landmark in Haslingfield. As the property awaits its new owners, it stands as a testament to creativity and community spirit.
