Single Gay Father Celebrates First Christmas with Adopted Son

A single gay man in the UK is celebrating his first Christmas with his adopted son, marking a significant milestone in his personal journey. Daniel Wood, who underwent a lengthy adoption process, reflects on the challenges and joys of becoming a parent.

Wood’s path to fatherhood was not straightforward. Growing up, he grappled with his sexuality in an environment where there was little representation of LGBTQ+ individuals. Although he recognized his attraction to men at a young age, the fear of coming out kept him from embracing his true self until he was 23. After marrying and planning a family with his husband, their eventual divorce left him questioning his dreams of parenthood.

For over a decade, Wood lived a fulfilling life as a single person, travelling and thriving in his career. However, a pivotal visit from friends and their children in the summer of 2024 ignited a long-suppressed desire for fatherhood. Surrounded by laughter and the joyful chaos of toddlers, he realized it was time to explore the possibility of adoption.

Determined to become a parent, Wood faced a new set of challenges. As he approached his 40th birthday, he began researching adoption as a single male. His concerns about societal acceptance were met with encouragement from his supportive parents. In November 2024, he contacted Adoption Matters, where he was welcomed with open arms, regardless of his sexual orientation or marital status.

The adoption process involved extensive preparations, including risk assessments and training sessions covering the unique needs of children in care. Wood was introduced to a national adoption database, where he reviewed the profiles of numerous children awaiting adoption. Among them was a little boy named Freddie, who captured his heart.

On Father’s Day, Wood made the decision to pursue adopting Freddie. Following a thorough assessment process and a successful initial meeting, the adoption panel unanimously agreed to the match. Their first encounter at a music group was a memorable one, as Freddie, beaming with excitement, immediately connected with Wood.

In October, after a gradual transition period, Freddie moved in with Wood. The initial weeks were challenging as Wood adjusted to parenting duties while ensuring Freddie’s safety. Yet, their bond grew stronger day by day. Wood describes Freddie as a loving and vibrant 18-month-old who brings immense joy to his life.

As Christmas approached, Wood wanted to make their first holiday season as a family special. With excitement, he decorated the tree and prepared for the festivities. When Freddie awoke from his nap and saw the Christmas tree for the first time, the delight on his face was unforgettable.

Looking ahead, Wood eagerly anticipates creating more cherished memories, including visits to see Santa and celebrating their new family traditions. This Christmas, he reflects on the profound gift of fatherhood, stating, “Freddie is the best gift I could ever have asked for.”

Wood’s journey underscores the evolving landscape of family dynamics, showcasing that love and commitment can create a family in diverse forms.
