A chef from Wales has been awarded the prestigious title of Hotel Chef of the Year at the Hotel Cateys 2025. Douglas Balish, executive chef at the luxury boutique hotel Grove of Narberth in Pembrokeshire, was recognized for his exceptional culinary skills and creativity at a ceremony that highlights the best in the UK hospitality industry.
The Hotel Cateys are renowned for celebrating outstanding talent, and Balish triumphed in the category for hotels with fewer than 250 covers. His innovative approach emphasizes local produce and seasonal ingredients sourced from the hotel’s kitchen garden and a network of local growers, farmers, and fishermen. Under his leadership, Grove of Narberth has retained its MICHELIN Key and garnered a high score in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards this year.
Celebrating Local Flavors
Since joining Grove of Narberth in 2019, Balish has transformed the dining experience into one that reflects the rich landscape of Pembrokeshire. His culinary creations are showcased in the hotel’s two restaurants, The Fernery and Artisan Rooms. The Fernery has earned four AA Rosettes, a testament to its culinary excellence.
In response to receiving the award, Balish expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “It’s a real honour to receive this Hotel Catey award. I’m incredibly proud of our team at Grove of Narberth, and this is very much a shared achievement. Representing Welsh produce on a national stage means a great deal to us, and we’ll continue to champion the ingredients and people who make this corner of Wales so special.”
A Recognized Talent
Balish’s accolade comes from a competitive shortlist that included chefs from prestigious establishments such as The Municipal Hotel & Spa Liverpool, The Fife Arms in Braemar, The Goring in London, and Lainston House in Winchester.
Karen de Koning, General Manager of Grove of Narberth, praised Balish for his leadership and dedication. She noted, “Douglas leads with such passion and generosity. His approach to cooking and mentoring brings out the very best in our kitchen and across the hotel. We’re thrilled to see him recognized at this level and look forward to continuing to build on the momentum this award brings.”
Grove of Narberth is celebrated for its warm hospitality and elegant interiors, providing guests with an experience shaped by the unique rhythms and stories of Wales. Balish’s commitment to local ingredients not only elevates the culinary offerings but also fosters a deeper connection between the hotel and the surrounding community.
As the recognition continues to affirm the quality of Welsh cuisine, Balish’s success at the Hotel Cateys serves as a reminder of the talent flourishing within the UK’s hospitality sector.
