The Democratic People’s Party (DNP) has announced a renewed focus on the status of the Serbian language and the issue of dual citizenship. During a meeting held on October 25, 2023, the party’s presidency unanimously adopted a resolution to intensify efforts among officials to address these matters through proposed amendments to the Citizenship Law.
Milun Zogović, Vice President of the DNP, along with party members Jelena Kljajević and Dragan Bojović, emphasized the necessity of initiating a national dialogue on these topics in the first quarter of 2024. The party believes that constitutional amendments are essential for stabilizing social and political conditions in light of upcoming European challenges.
The DNP contends that these amendments are not a threat to the state; rather, they represent a crucial step towards ensuring better integration and representation for the linguistic majority. The party’s presidency has stressed that any constitutional changes should first be proposed and ratified by the government, ensuring that such decisions are made at an institutional level and can be effectively legislated in the Assembly.
Zogović and his colleagues noted the importance of transitioning from general statements to concrete actions. They called on key political stakeholders to demonstrate responsibility and commitment to addressing the ongoing discrimination faced by the Serbian-speaking population.
In their official statement, the DNP pledged to fully support these initiatives in alignment with their political strength and the ideological goals they have consistently championed. They highlighted the urgency of this dialogue, aiming to foster a more inclusive environment that respects the rights of all citizens.
This renewed push for dual citizenship and the recognition of the Serbian language signifies a pivotal moment for the DNP as it seeks to engage more actively with pressing societal issues. The party’s commitment to these changes reflects a broader aim to strengthen the community’s cultural identity while navigating the complexities of modern governance.
