Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized that midfielder Kobbie Mainoo must “fight for his job” as he continues to seek his first Premier League start this season. The 20-year-old has generated significant interest, particularly after a lively performance during Monday’s thrilling 4-4 draw against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. This match featured a notable display of support for Mainoo, as his half-brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, wore a t-shirt proclaiming “Free Kobbie Mainoo,” which quickly went viral across social media.
Amorim clarified that there are no issues with Mainoo’s attitude, but rather a need for him to prove his worth on the pitch. “He’s a shy boy, but it’s not his responsibility,” Amorim stated. “He’s responsible for his acts, and his act was to play well in the last game.” The manager reflected on his own experiences, recalling that even legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney spent time on the bench during their early careers. He underscored that being a substitute at Manchester United at such a young age is not a setback.
Amorim indicated that Mainoo may have an opportunity to start in the upcoming match against Aston Villa, especially as the team faces challenges with six first-team players sidelined due to injuries, suspensions, and participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. “I’m just saying that I’m trying to win games and to show the players that, if you do things right, you will play no matter what the name,” he added.
As the January transfer window approaches, Amorim hinted at the possibility of strengthening the squad. He mentioned Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo as a player of interest, describing him as a “special player.” While discussing potential transfers, Amorim stated, “The only thing we know is that we would only try to bring players that we think are going to be the future.” He clarified that any new signings would not merely be to address current absences but would be aimed at long-term success.
The manager has also considered adjusting his tactical approach, potentially shifting from his favored three-man defense to a back four to better accommodate the current squad limitations. As the club navigates through this period, Amorim remains focused on winning matches and developing players like Mainoo, emphasizing his commitment to the team’s performance and future growth.
With the transfer window opening next month, the upcoming decisions will be critical for Manchester United as they look to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for trophies in the future.
