North Korea has revealed its first nearly complete nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine, a significant development in the nation’s naval capabilities. During a recent inspection, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emphasized the importance of the vessel, describing its construction as an “epoch-making crucial change,” according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The submarine, which weighs approximately 8,700 tons, is part of North Korea’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military prowess. Kim’s inspection comes at a time when regional tensions are escalating, particularly in light of South Korea’s plans to develop its own nuclear submarine, a move recently supported by the United States.
Kim asserted that these developments threaten North Korea’s security and maritime sovereignty. He warned that adversaries would face serious consequences if they jeopardize the DPRK‘s strategic interests, stating, “They will be forced to pay a dear price when they violate the security of the DPRK’s strategic sovereignty.”
During his visit, Kim also received updates on research into new “underwater secret weapons.” This announcement aligns with North Korea’s historical pattern of showcasing military advancements amid strained relations with neighboring countries.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have intensified as North Korea criticizes the military collaboration among the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Pyongyang claims these nations are attempting to create an “Asian version of NATO” and are conducting provocative military exercises. In October, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung urged China to take a more active role in promoting peace and addressing the nuclear issue on the peninsula.
