Moray Council libraries have introduced two significant research tools that enhance access to historical and genealogical information for local residents. Library members can now utilize the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, broadening their ability to explore history and trace family lineage.
The British Newspaper Archive provides access to millions of newspaper articles from around the world. By using a library membership card, users can perform free searches and delve into a rich history documented through various publications. This resource is now available at all Moray libraries, making it easier for community members to engage with their heritage.
In addition, the Ancestry Library Edition enables users to research their family history through a variety of UK records. This includes vital records such as births, deaths, and marriages, as well as military service documents, census records, parish records, and immigration/emigration records. The availability of these resources is expected to be particularly beneficial for those interested in genealogy and the historical context of their families.
Library computers are accessible for free, although it is advisable for users to book in advance to secure a time slot. For those who prefer to use personal devices, the libraries offer public Wi-Fi, allowing remote access to these valuable research tools.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the launch of these digital resources. “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” she stated. “Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The addition of these research tools reflects Moray Council’s commitment to enhancing educational and informational services within the community. With the rise of digital resources, libraries continue to adapt, ensuring that they remain relevant and valuable in the modern information landscape.
