Moray Council has enhanced its library services by introducing two significant research tools available to all library members. The addition of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition empowers users to delve into history and explore their family genealogy.
The British Newspaper Archive provides access to millions of newspaper articles from across the globe, now available at local libraries in Moray. With a valid library membership card, users can perform free searches and review historical newspapers, enriching their understanding of past events. This resource opens a window into the rich tapestry of history, allowing individuals to connect with their heritage.
In addition to historical research, the Ancestry Library Edition offers a platform for tracing family histories. Library members can access UK records related to births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more. This includes valuable resources such as UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration records, making it easier for individuals to discover their ancestry.
Library facilities are available for public use, with computers provided for free. To ensure access, users are encouraged to book these facilities in advance. Alternatively, library members can connect to public Wi-Fi and utilize their personal devices to access these powerful research tools.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new digital resources. “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” said Robertson. “Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The implementation of these tools reflects Moray Council’s commitment to enhancing community services and providing residents with the means to engage with their history. This initiative not only fosters a deeper understanding of individual and collective pasts but also encourages greater participation in local library services.
With these new resources, Moray libraries are poised to become invaluable hubs for research and community engagement, offering unprecedented access to historical records and family history resources. As users explore the wealth of information available, the libraries stand as a testament to the importance of preserving and understanding history in today’s digital age.
