Aberystwyth University Volleyball Club (AUVC) marked a successful debut in their new kit with a straight sets victory against Gloucester on March 15, 2024. The match, held at their home court, showcased the club’s growing potential despite a fiercely competitive performance from the visiting team.
The first set proved challenging for AUVC as Gloucester quickly established an early lead, going ahead 13-7. A pivotal time-out called by the Aberystwyth coach shifted the momentum. Following this, the Aber setter and hitters took charge. A remarkable service run from player number 9 turned the tide, allowing Aberystwyth to clinch the set.
The drama intensified in the second set. Aberystwyth found themselves trailing 17-23, needing a significant comeback. A controversial line call in their favor at 22-23 sparked renewed energy in the team. The players rallied to secure the set by the narrowest of margins, demonstrating resilience and teamwork under pressure.
The final set featured thrilling exchanges, with both teams showcasing their skills. Aberystwyth initially surged ahead but saw Gloucester equalize at 13-13. Another well-timed time-out from the coach reignited Aberystwyth’s focus, leading to a series of powerful serves and well-coordinated rallies that sealed their victory.
This match reflects the promising development of the Aberystwyth team, which is still in the early phases of building chemistry on the court. AUVC competes in the BUCS Western Tier 2 leagues, facing off against universities from Cardiff, Swansea, and extending their reach to Bristol, Bournemouth, and Gloucester.
In addition to their competitive endeavors, AUVC actively engages with the community by running an after-school club at Plascrug every Wednesday. Supported by Ceredigion Actif, the sessions are led by volunteer coaches from AUVC under the direction of Sylvester Beecroft, the current Ceredigion Sports Coach of the Year. These sessions are free of charge and welcome school pupils of all ages, fostering a love for volleyball among the younger generation.
